New Smyrna Beach wrestling 12/21/06

The hometown Barracudas beat the visiting Matanzas High School Pirates Thursday evening 48 to 27. Matanzas High school is located in Palm Coast.

Wade Downs in red, of New Smyrna Beach, goes for his opponents legs in the 152 pound weight class match. This class, along with about six others were the only classes to complete in the night's matches. All others had to be forfeited by whichever school could not produce a competitor for certain weight classes. This is commonplace when schools don't have complete wrestling rosters.

Joe Fajardo, of New Smyrna Beach, does battle against the Matanzas Pirates Thursday night. Fajardo fights for position during his 160 pound class match.

In what was facing up to be the top bout of the night Paul Snow, of New Smyrna Beach, and Beau Combs, of Matanzas, battled in the 171 pound weight class.

Combs seemed to be grimacing in obvious pain during the match when he finally rolled his back to the pad and didn't get up. Combs was thrown to the floor and landed awkardly on his head seconds before. The official calling the match thought the injury had happened a few minutes earlier on the opposite side of the pad but "the injury caught up to him other here."

According to medics called to the scene, it's likely Combs pulled a muscle in his neck. He had feeling in his legs and arms. He was talking the entire time his neck was put into a brace.

Combs did appear to lose consciousness, however brief, when trainers initially went to check on him and his arms were limp when picked up.

Combs was taken on a stretcher out of the gym for precautionary measures to have his neck examined. Likely injury was said to be a pulled neck muscle or pinched nerve in the neck, medical personnel said.
